| In 2001, we were finally ready to build our retirement home on Branch Lake in Ellsworth where we had owned a rather primitive camp for 35 years. We chose Robert Knight of Blue Hill as our architect because of his reputation in building small houses which is all our lot and budget would support. He, in turn, recommended Steve Shea, of E.L. Shea as our contractor. From the start, we felt that Steve also understood and respected both our aspirations and constraints.
Ours was a non-conforming lot which required tight and careful planning. We made clear to Steve that we expected that he and his crew would proceed very carefully, respecting the fragile environment of the lake. Even though they had to do some blasting and tree removal to fit our house onto the site, they were very thoughtful, preserving every tree and rock they could. Steve went above and beyond by having any suitable trees which had to be removed sawn into boards which we have used for various projects. This was not in the plans, but simply his own initiative. As the construction progressed, we got to see Steve’s crew and subcontractors in action. We had very few concerns and whenever there was one, Steve rectified problems quickly. One subcontractor told us there were subs in the area who didn’t want to work for Steve because he was so picky and demanding. As the clients, we were grateful for that attention to quality. Two of Steve’s employees deserve special commendation. Donny Lanpher is an incredible finish carpenter. Watching the detail he put into our staircase was a wonder to behold. Jimmy Webber, the E.L. Shea cabinet maker, built us kitchen cabinets which are exactly what we wanted, after looking at a picture ripped out of a magazine. In summary, our project was a small one with a small budget. Our needs and wishes were treated with the utmost respect by Steve and his employees and subcontractors. I’ve worked with many other contractors over the years, but have never had such a positive experience. We love our little house by the lake. Diana J. Cate Katharine K. Wilkins |
